THE PROCESS

DESIGN

The Brief – a solid 9ct gold charm to represent 10 years married.

We wanted something quirky and representative of tin, 10 years together. I sketched up a tin can, with the phrase 10 years strong. The client and I worked together and settled on their surname to wrap around the tin in the Campbells soup font and 10 years strong to be engraved on the bottom of the can like an expiry date.

I then created a 3D model of the can on matrix. This was a complex but fun piece to model. I wanted the can lid to be slightly pulled open so that the lid pulley could be used to connect to the charm bracelet. A challenging bit of modelling but the effect was very rewarding.

THE MAKING BIT

AT THE BENCH

I printed the lid and tin separately in wax so the tin could be hollow and then cast the wax model using the lost wax process in 9ct gold.

I cleaned up the casts and soldered the lid to the tin, I then filed and sanded the piece until it was smooth and ready for a polish. After a good polish I added a jump ring so it could be connected to her existing charm bracelet.

Then off to the laser engraver to get its meaningful inscriptions.

HANDING IT OVER

The client was thrilled with the piece and very proud to give it to his wife for their anniversary present.

It was a real honour to create such a playful and unique charm for this lovely couple.
